Classic Tuna Salad Sandwich

Craig Claiborne’s take on the familiar lunchbox sandwich combines tuna with crunchy celery, red onion and red bell pepper. Capers and lemon juice give the filling a tangy lift.

Ingredients

  • 2 6-ounce cans solid water-packed tuna
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise, preferably homemade
  • 1/2 cup finely diced celery
  • 3 tablespoons finely diced red onion
  • 3 tablespoons finely minced red bell pepper
  • 2 tablespoons drained capers
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • sliced sandwich bread of choice

Preparation

  1. 1

In a medium bowl, use a fork to thoroughly mix the tuna, mayonnaise, celery, onion, bell pepper, capers and lemon juice.

  2. 2

Season with salt and pepper to taste, then serve on your preferred sandwich bread.

Notes

Liked it with adjustments: leave out the bell pepper and capers, add two more 6-ounce cans of tuna for 24 ounces total, and add one finely grated garlic clove. With these changes, it tasted very similar to the Mollie Stones recipe.
